TikTok Shop is about to let its sellers cross the Channel in both directions. On 7 September ChannelX and Ecommerce News Europe both reported the same seller communication: TikTok Shop cross-border selling between the UK and the EU starts with an invitation-only pilot on 21 September and opens more broadly on 19 October 2026. UK sellers will be able to list in twelve EU markets; sellers registered in eight EU member states will be able to reach UK shoppers.

TikTok’s own seller documentation, a Policy Center page dated 26 August titled “[For EU sellers] - Sell to UK”, spells out how the EU-to-UK direction works: who qualifies, how the new shop is reviewed and who ships the parcel. The short answer is: you do.

How TikTok Shop got to a two-way border

TikTok Shop has been live in the UK for almost five years, according to Ecommerce News Europe, which puts the number of small businesses selling there at more than 300,000. Continental Europe came in waves: on 28 May TikTok’s newsroom announced the launch in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland from 15 June, alongside a “Sell Across Europe” tool that lets a seller onboarded in one EU country open shops in the others from a single registration. TikTok’s “Selling Across EU” page, updated 8 June, describes the intra-EU mechanics: product pages are auto-translated and editable, account health is measured at EU level, and sellers choose between TikTok-partnered logistics and their own carriers.

What was missing was the UK: a brand selling well on one side had to onboard again to reach the other. The September announcement closes that gap, and unlike the Out of Phone screen network expansion it matters to anyone who ships products.

What TikTok Shop cross-border selling offers UK sellers

ChannelX’s report, based on TikTok’s message to UK sellers, lists twelve destination markets: Germany, Italy, France, Spain, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Austria, Greece, Portugal and Hungary. Eligibility is checked automatically against four criteria:

  • Operating status: an active local seller already onboarded in the UK.
  • Account health: in good standing, not on a high-risk watchlist or in high-risk probation.
  • Recent activity: sales within the last 30 days; dormant shops do not qualify.
  • Financial standing: no significant outstanding negative balance.

If a shop passes, the option to expand appears in the seller dashboard. TikTok also warns that some approved categories are restricted in the EU or need extra attributes and compliance documents before they can be listed.

What the EU-to-UK page actually says

The TikTok Seller Center page for EU sellers applies to shops registered in Belgium, Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland. It uses the same four criteria and adds the operational detail.

It is a new application. Expansion “is treated as a new application and will go through our standard review process,” and a rejection does not affect the existing shop. Once approved, the UK shop is linked to the existing account and managed from one interface, but payments, settlements and local promotions are handled separately per market. If the EU shop has passed probation, the UK shop passes automatically; otherwise it starts in probation under the UK programme.

Periodic identity checks with a VAT purpose. UK shops face “UK Targeted Checks” on identity documents, addresses and representative details “to comply with the responsibilities from a VAT perspective to determine a seller’s establishment,” with 14 calendar days to respond before the payment function may be affected.

Ship by Seller is the only shipping option. TikTok puts it plainly: “You pick the courier, you pay the courier, and you handle the customer if the delivery goes wrong.” The parcel may start from a UK warehouse or from an EU warehouse where the seller has a registered shop. The seller has two working days to confirm, pack and label the order and must hand it to the courier within seven working days, or the order cancels itself. Delivery deadlines differ by route, and TikTok points sellers to its delivery SLA guide before promising a date.

Returns need a UK address. After-sales rules are unchanged, but returned items have to go somewhere in the UK. A seller with no UK return warehouse who has not enabled “Refund Only” will have the parcel sent to a TikTok Shop return warehouse and be charged the processing costs.

Compliance is the seller’s job. The page requires “the relevant regulatory certifications and documentations” for the UK market and links to the UK restricted and prohibited product policies, product safety rules and category guides for electronics, toys, baby products and cosmetics.

The UK-to-EU page is not publicly accessible without a UK seller login, so we could not confirm whether the same Ship-by-Seller-only rule applies in that direction.

What it means for your business

This is a market-entry test with almost no fixed cost. For a brand already on TikTok Shop, the expansion is the closest thing to a free trial of a foreign market: existing listings, content and account history, and shoppers across the Channel. Our view is that the first month is research, not revenue: watch which products sell, which countries order and what the delivery complaints look like before investing in local stock or creators.

Logistics is the real product decision. Ship by Seller means every cross-border order is a small parcel crossing a customs border under your name, on a courier you chose, against a deadline that varies by route. Price a tracked service to each destination, check that the listed price still leaves margin, and decide which SKUs are too heavy or too cheap to cross the border. The tight windows also mean the order has to reach whoever packs it without manual copying; that is where our CRM and order-handling automation usually starts: order in one place, label generated, tracking number back to the platform without retyping.

Customs and VAT do not disappear because the platform is new. TikTok’s EU-to-UK page covers VAT establishment checks and returns but says nothing about who acts as importer on the parcel itself. For UK sellers shipping into the EU that question just became sharper: the Council adopted the EU customs reform that makes platforms the deemed importer on 3 September, with a parcel handling fee from 1 November. TikTok has not published how it will handle duty and VAT on UK-origin parcels. Ask before you list, and do not assume the shopper will pay at the door.

Your product pages will be read in a language you did not write them in. The intra-EU tool auto-translates product pages and lets sellers edit the result; twelve markets means at least eight languages. Machine-translated titles and attributes are where restricted-category filters trip, and where a shopper in Warsaw or Lisbon decides you are not a serious brand. Localising the best-selling products properly, with local size charts, units and safety wording, is a small piece of the e-commerce website work we do for brands entering new markets, and it pays back in fewer returns as much as in more orders.

Returns are a cost you set, not one that happens to you. Decide now which products get “Refund Only” treatment when a return is not worth the postage, and arrange a return address in the destination market for the rest. Letting the platform’s warehouse take the parcel and bill you is the most expensive default in the programme.

Our reading is that TikTok is making the border a setting rather than a project, with one difference from the marketplaces that did it before: here the seller carries the parcel. The brands that do well from 19 October will be the ones that spend the next five weeks on carriers, customs and product data, not on the announcement.
